Once a rural farm settlement, distinct from the town, Gateside has long since been swallowed up by the ever growing town of Whitburn.

The Old farm and rural steadings of Gateside was once an Independent settlement that was situated about Half a mile from Whitburn Cross. About 200 yards West from where the town of Whitburn ended, where the Towns Bowling Club is now situated,

What the Are Looks like Today

On the 1856 Parish map above, we can see the steadings of Gateside. It straddles the main road with a track on the South side. Leading up the hill a hundred years or so to Two Quarries. What is now present day ‘Gateside road’, now runs up that track in between the Two. The One on the West side we can see here with water in it, is still undeveloped and has a grass park upon its site. The Eastern quarry on the other side of the track now is also still undeveloped and now has a set of Wooden Lock-ups up the site.

The Farm and yard at the foot of the track, on the main road you can see marked ‘147’. It is now a small shopping arcade known as ‘Murraysgate’ shopping mall. However, Murraysgate farm itself was actually another few hundred yards along the road to the West of Gateside. The house opposite, on the North side of the street is still there today.

There’s now a road where the gap between the buildings on the North side of the street was. It leads downhill into the Industrial estate that now sits upon the land to the North side of the West main street behind Gateside.It’s a through road that joins the A8 bypass that runs along the North edge of Whitburn from the flyeove at the foot of Armadale road to the Roundabout at the foot of Polkemmet road by the Heartlands Retail park and Motorway Junction.
