If you look at the streets in the Heartlands housing estate on Whitburn’s West side, you will see a street named ‘Righouse avenue’. As like most of the streets in this modern housing estate, it takes its name from One of the areas Old farms. Only, with this One, It’s not just the name of a farm that was in the general Area. But was the actual farm that sat upon the land where the houses now stand.

Righouse Farm or ‘McIndoes Farm”

Before the development of the Heartlands Project to the West of Whitburn, Polkemmet Road served as the Towns Western Border. Running from the end of West Main Street up to the Polkemmet Pit, the road was a hard borderline. But, to the West side of the road, about halfway up, was a road that run off Westwards. A Farm road. Along this Road, there was once a series of farms. before coming to Cult Farm, whose ruined house, is still there, you’d pass Righouse farm.

Colloquially known as “McIndoes farm” , Righouse operated as a Dairy farm up until its demise in the Early 21st century with the commencement of the Heartlands project. The farm was demolished in 2008 and the site open casted for coal. Afterwards, it was back-filled and was developed into the Heartlands housing scheme. The entire existence of Righouse farm has been completely erased from existence. Except for in memory, record and of course, the street name ‘Righouse Avenue’ built on the site of the farm.
