About 200 yards to the East of what is now ‘East Foulshiels farm’. At the time of the Map being made, the name that is now East Foulshiels, was called Mid Foulshiels. The History of East Foulshiels
You see, the lands of Foulshiels are quite extensive, and so have an East, West and Middle farm. In actual fact, at One time, around the time this map was made, there were Three middles. You had ‘Mid Foulshiels’ which still exists as East Foulshiels and sits on the corner of the Road. Then there was ‘The Middle Seat of Foulshiels’ further to the West. But, you also had Mid Seat Cottage, which sat a few hundred yards away from the Middle seat. Next to the Mid Seat Station, an upper-ground station on the Coltness, Morningside & Wilsontown Railway line.
Originally a prominent estate, Foulshiels was divided into sections during the agricultural Improvements of the 18th century. The original Fermetouns that had operated on the land with Runrig agricultural to be managed by single tenant farmers. So, this map showing a single building in 1855 would have been Its own village on the east side of the Foulshiels estate just a century beforehand.
